Lately there has been more and more interest in the O+12 method for conceiving a girl so I thought I’d go into a bit more detail about it, and let you know its success rates.
As I’ve already mentioned on this blog, the O+12 method for conceiving a girl states that you must have intercourse around twelve hours after ovulation to increase your chances of getting a female baby (this method doesn’t work with trying for a boy baby).
It was developed by an Australian mother who after following the Shettles method to try and get a girl (and ended up with six sons) started looking deeper into gender selection theories and found that a New Zealand study – which ironically was trying to test out the Shettles method – found that in fact the vast majority of girls were born to woman who conceived after ovulation, rather than before which is what Shettles suggests.
The study showed that there were far more girls born to those couples who conceived the day following ovulation and therefore her O+12 method was developed.
It was also found in the study that more girl babies where born to mothers when the father did not ejaculate for some time before intercourse thus building up the ratio of female to male sperm.
The Success Rate of the O+12 Method
While no true clinical trials have been tested using the O+12 Method, probably because it is very hard to pinpoint ovulation without an ultrasound machine, many devotees’ claim a 90% success rate, which is very high for at home gender selection methods if it is true.
How to Do the O+12 Method Correctly
- The male must refrain from ejaculation for up to 7 days before intercourse to increase the ratio of female sperm.
- Keep track of ovulation via OPK’s or other methods – when you get confirmation that ovulation is about to happen look for the changes to indicate that you are ovulating such as a rise in temperature (if you are charting), or any ovulation pains
- Have intercourse within 8 to 20 hours after you believe you ovulated.
